Dr Helen Kingston is a GP in Frome, Somerset and co-founder of the Compassionate Frome project. Dr Kingston launched the project as a response to a growing number of patients who seemed defeated by the medicalisation of their lives: treated as if they were a cluster of symptoms rather than a human being who happened to have health problems. The project was designed to better connect and support patients and improve the working lives of those in health care. In February of this year George Monbiot wrote an article – The Town that’s Found a Potent Cure for Illness – about Compassionate Frome in the Guardian. The issues the team were trying to tackle resonated across the UK. In July this year she was awarded a Point of Light award by the Prime minster on behalf of the Compassionate Frome team for their work and achievements.
